U.S. Chief District Judge Shelly Dick has blocked Louisiana's first execution by nitrogen gas, citing constitutional concerns and potential interference with the inmate's breathing meditation.

Jessie Hoffman Jr., a Buddhist, argued that the method of execution would violate his religious rights. In 1996, Hoffman was18 when he abducted Mary Elliott, at gunpoint from a New Orleans parking garage on the night before Thanksgiving Day. He forced her to withdraw $200 from an ATM, then he raped and shot her to death. Hoffman now alleges that he is a Buddhist and that the method of execution would violate his religious rights.

However, under international law, religious rights can be denied to those who are a threat and danger to society.

“It's a sad day in society when religious rights protect rapists,” Human Rights reporter Joseph Bonner states. Adding, “ the Catholic church has been getting away with it for far too long and now the Buddhist want to do it too.”

A measles outbreak that originated in West Texas has now spread to Oklahoma, with two confirmed cases in the state. Both individuals were exposed to the outbreak in Texas, which has been growing on the western edge of the state. The Texas Department of State Health Services reported 223 confirmed cases in Texas, up from 198 last week. The New Mexico Department of Health also reported 33 cases, primarily in Lea County, which borders Texas.

Health officials are urging residents to ensure they are vaccinated against the highly contagious disease to prevent further spread. Measles is one of the most contagious viruses, and unvaccinated individuals are at the highest risk of infection. The outbreak has primarily affected unvaccinated children. The Oklahoma State Department of Health emphasized the importance of being aware of measles activity, especially when traveling or hosting visitors. The recommended quarantine period for those exposed to measles is 21 days to see if symptoms develop.

The situation highlights the critical need for vaccination to prevent the spread of measles and protect public health.

City leaders in Hanceville, Alabama, have taken decisive action to replace and rebuild the local police department after a grand jury found it operated more like a criminal enterprise than a law enforcement agency. The decision follows a series of scandals and allegations of corruption within the department, including mishandling or removing evidence from the evidence room and using performance-enhancing drugs. The Hanceville City Council voted unanimously to suspend department operations and search for a new police chief to build a new department and hire employees. The Cullman County Sheriff's Office will handle law enforcement duties in Hanceville until the new force is operational. This move aims to restore public trust and ensure proper law enforcement practices in the community.
