A Service Dog Gave a Sick Teen Her School Days Back
The story
Lilla, of Rochester Hills, Michigan, has lived with illness for as long as she can remember. Her diagnoses have included POTS, PANDAS, Lyme disease, a connective tissue disorder, and long COVID. For years school felt out of reach.
Her mother, Margaret, managed a medical life that most families never see. They decided to try a service dog, not as a miracle, but as a practical partner. Lopez learned to alert and brace. Once, in the kitchen, he pawed Lilla before she lost consciousness. She made it to the couch instead of the floor.
What happened next
That summer she walked the Detroit Zoo, something she had not believed she could do. In the fall she went back to school for the first time in five years. She told NPR she had hope again. Not a perfect body. Hope.
A lesson you can use this week
Support can look like a person, a tool, or an animal trained to notice what you miss when you are tired. Ask what practical help would make one ordinary day safer or kinder.
