A Town Built a Night Shift for Ducks
The story
A group of mallards decided a parking lot in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, was a fine place to raise ducklings. Roads disagreed.
Fifteen residents became volunteer duck wardens. They rotate shifts and escort about 20 birds through town in the evening. It is slightly funny and entirely serious. Traffic can end a family of ducks in one turn.
What happened next
The escorts became local news because tenderness toward animals is one way a town shows its nerves still work. Nobody needed a title. They needed a rota.
A lesson you can use this week
Pick one small recurring kindness and put it on a calendar. Consistency is what turns a nice impulse into a public good.
