Neighbors Ran Toward a Burning Plane in a Front Yard
The story
In July, a small plane crashed into a tree in a Pembroke Pines neighborhood and caught fire. Most of us would freeze. Giovanna Hanley and the people on that block ran toward the wreckage.
Someone brought an ax. Someone brought a fire extinguisher. Neighbors used hoses. Giovanna’s father-in-law broke a window. Together they cleared a path and pulled people out.
What happened next
All four passengers were rescued and taken to hospitals. The mayor called the neighbors’ actions remarkable. The useful fact is simpler: a cluster of ordinary people decided the fire was their problem too.
A lesson you can use this week
In an emergency, look for one concrete job: hose, call, blanket, path. Collective courage is often just several people refusing to be an audience.
