A Glasgow Teen Grew Up Fast, Then Led a Night Walk Home
The story
Grace Callaghan of Cathcart, Glasgow, was 16 when she found a lump on her stomach. The diagnosis was neuroblastoma. She had three surgeries and years of chemotherapy. She said cancer left no room to be an ordinary teenager.
Side effects stayed after the all-clear. So did a sharper sense of what other people’s effort is worth.
What happened next
At 21 she was guest of honour at Cancer Research UK’s Shine Night Walk. More than 1,740 people walked. She sounded the horn at the SEC. She talked about a future with less fear in it, not about being placed on a poster.
A lesson you can use this week
If you have come through a medical season, lend your presence to someone still in the middle. Your face in a crowd can be the whole gift.
