10-year-old Hunter Matthews fought the murderer of his father, WWJ950's news anchor Jim Matthews.

Hunter is in critical condition and had to undergo brain surgery after suffering trauma to the head after being beaten and tied in a closet when he tried to fight off his father's murderer, a 54-year-old 'family friend' who police found overdosing on heroin with self-inflicted wounds in the basement of the Matthews’ house.

Jim Matthew's girlfriend who was also beaten managed to flee the scene with their five-year-old daughter, Rosie, who suffered minor injuries.

The suspect, 55, was taken to a hospital after he tried to kill himself following the attack, police said.
